Today was a heart-warming day and it’s lovely to celebrate these moments - thanks for sharing Emma. 🥰 One of our other tutors was crying earlier today too. When I was told that E made Jo cry, I was initially worried what had happened…and then reassured they were happy tears! E said that he feels safe with her and enjoys learning. We all have good days and bad days…and today was a good day for these learners 💙. We will continue to make adjustments however we can; and will strive to make every learner feel safe to learn and discover their potential. One of my students giggled today. It caught me completely off guard.

I'm not an outwardly emotional person.
But to hear the sound of genuine, pure, childish joy from a boy whose parents didn't think would talk to me 7 months ago...argh it got me. Everything we'd done suddenly gained meaning in that one second.

This was safety. This was happiness.

This is what alternative provisions like Sowing Seeds Tuition and Wellbeing can achieve. Steadily building safety; forging relationships; breaking down walls; listening; researching; personalising.

Yes we've got through the year 7 curriculum, and yes, he can prove why the sum of three consecutive integers is divisible by 3.

But today he giggled. That's everything. ❤️

🤩Our incredible team was on the front page of The Telegraph & Argus (Bradford) last week! It’s hard to believe that just under 2 weeks ago we celebrated with the incredible educators who were finalists in Bradford’s Education Awards - and it’s thanks to your nominations 🥰. We didn’t win Specialist Provision of the Year (this year!), and we knew it was a tough category, but to be in the photo on the front cover shows how proud we were to be there.🥰!

We also had the privilege of judging the shortlist for Supporting Member of Staff of the Year - and Stacey (our Head of Operations) and I presented the award. We purposely chose this category over others as it reflects the importance of these key professionals who play an even more important role to support children, families (and all staff) at school, home and in the community. All of the finalists were fantastic and well done to Hayley for winning this award! She was in complete shock and Stacey and I stayed with her on stage, so she could celebrate this moment, as she was so nervous.

We would have loved to invite all our team from Sowing Seeds Alternative Learning and to be able to celebrate how much we’ve grown and what we have already achieved together for our learners and their families. Everyone was there in spirit.💙

To all of our amazing Year 6 and Year 11 students from everyone at Sowing Seeds Tuition 🌱

This is your reminder that exams are only a moment in time.
They are not a measure of your kindness, your creativity, your humour, your resilience, or the person you are becoming.

As you walk into your tests and exams this week, take this with you (and we will keep reminding you when we see you!):

Breathe.
Breathe in for 4… hold for 4… breathe out for 4…hold for 4 and repeat
(Here’s a little poem from Rachel)

One question at a time.

Exams are pages, Not the whole book. A snapshot in time, Not your entire story.
They cannot measure Your kindness to others, Your courage on hard days,
They don’t see the evenings you revised, The moments you doubted yourself but tried anyway, The quiet resilience growing inside you Every single day.
So walk in with your head high. Not because you need to be perfect But because you have prepared, You have persevered, And you are more capable than you think.

One breath. One question. One step at a time.

And whatever happens next, Be proud of how far you’ve already come.

Good luck Year 6 and Year 11. We believe in you, always. 🌱

It was an emotional day listening to all of the speakers, hearing about all of the experiences (and trauma) of parents and reading the comments from children about their experience in education and now out of mainstream schools - sadly it was all too familiar and is always upsetting to know this is happening to one child let alone thousands across the country.

I love teaching and have always been proud to work in education but left as I knew the system was broken and it broke me.

Today, we were united in wanting to achieve the same goal for all our children and young people - now and in the future.

I spoke on behalf of the many parents and carers who couldn’t be here today, and teachers who work tirelessly. I will continue to do what I can to give you a voice to create change.

🚰👏Well done to our learners for an incredible Friday afternoon! Jordan taught our learners about the different fittings and fixtures and they had plenty of hands-on practical learning by measuring, cutting and connecting the pipes to the taps - even better, there were no leaks! Next week it’s all about electrics 12.30-14.30 and we have the option to deliver as part of the Construction ASDAN short course with one of our learning mentors too! We will also run half termly blocks focusing on one element but want to run tasters this half term for our learners to experience different skills and vocations.

You can book via our website or DM us ☺️

📅 Saturday 9th May – Leeds

facebook.com/events/s/save-send-legal-rights-nationa/26293704540239508/

We are running out of time to be heard and share our thoughts on the imminent SEND reform. This WILL have a lasting impact on our children and young people with SEND not just now, but into adulthood.

If your child is undiagnosed, awaiting a diagnosis or has an EHCP (or hasn’t been born yet!) it’s not a matter of if they are affected - they will be affected by this. Sadly, all of us will.

The EHCP, despite its faults, is still a legal document that holds the school and LA to account - for many parents, this is something that has been traumatically fought for and also a ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ (whether it offers validation, hope, the right support to meet their needs now and prepare for their future). This will be gone. Only a child with very complex needs will have an EHCP. (There’s more formal information below.)

The majority of children will be categorised under 3 tiers by school to decide what support they need and the quality of this will depend on funding, capacity, premises and everyone’s knowledge of SEND - no EHCP or legal document will stipulate what needs to be provided. The LA’s involvement is very much being removed.

Once a child has been identified to need specialist support, a different type of unregulated panel will decide which ‘funnel’ they fall into based on 7 categories with a flat rate for funding. A new document will be created, an Independent Support Plan, by schools. This is not a binding legal document - and ironically the majority of students with SEND already have a support plan or pupil passport to support them in mainstream school!

But what happens to the children, like many of ours, who can’t go to school? 😭

The Save Our Children’s Rights campaign, led by Special Needs Jungle and IPSEA, has organised the Leeds event on 9th May as part of a national day of action. I will be there along with many of our parents and carers (who have organised this)!

The proposed SEND reforms risks significantly changing the landscape of support over the next decade and for generations to come. For many families, this will mean:

* Reduced access to individualised provision that truly meets your child’s needs
* Increased barriers to securing EOTAS, non-school provision, and alternative provision (AP) - like Sowing Seeds!
* More standardised approaches that may not recognise complex or unique needs
* Greater difficulty in ensuring the right support is in place as children grow into young people and prepare for adulthood

These changes will limit the flexibility and rights that currently allow many of our children to access education in a way that is safe, appropriate, and effective for them.

For those of us who rely on these rights now, we know how vital they are. For families earlier in their journey, these reforms WILL shape what is — and isn’t — possible for your child over the next 5–10 years. You will see the changes from as early as 2029! We are seeing them now, and it’s not even law - yet.

This is why it is so important that we come together and are visible. Please join us and show your support. A number of people will be speaking - I will also be speaking to share my experience in education; my own perspective as a non-school AP; and, why your children’s rights are fundamental in enabling us to do what we do each day.

If you feel able, whether that is through attending, listening, or sitting/standing in solidarity. Being visible together sends a clear message that we know these changes will restrict our children’s futures.

Please share this with other families and educators who may be affected.
