A SECOND VENUE FOR SOWING SEEDS
February 2024 Starting in February, we are opening our new learning and wellbeing space at The Activity Den, Shipley for
Social Media.
One of the reasons I became a tutor was because I wanted to focus on children's mental health as much as their academic progress.
As a Head of English and senior leader, I saw first-hand how anxiety and stress increased as exams approached. For some young people, it became so overwhelming that they stopped attending school altogether. And this is happening even before it’s an exam year (which says a lots).
I remember the countdowns we used to display around school corridors and classrooms. "100 days until exams." "50 days left."
At the time, I genuinely believed they were helpful. I thought they reminded students of the importance of the exams and how much time they had left to prepare.
But knowing what I know now, both professionally and personally, I see it very differently.
Imagine being 15 or 16 years old and seeing a giant countdown every day to what feels like the most important moment of your life. Then imagine not knowing how to revise, not having a quiet space to study, feeling behind in several subjects, or lacking confidence altogether. And the pressure…
For many children, that doesn't create motivation.
It creates panic.
And when anxiety takes over, instinct kicks in. Fight. Flight. Freeze.
At Sowing Seeds Tuition, when we support students with SATs, GCSEs or A Levels, and from 5-19, we don't start with the content.
We start with the child and young person.
We talk about how they feel about the subject. We explore their worries about school or upcoming exams. We identify where they feel confident and where they don't. We find the gaps, but more importantly, we build confidence alongside knowledge.
We also teach something that many young people have never been shown properly tailored for them:
📚 How to revise
📚 How to study effectively
📚 Which revision strategies work best for them (and the subject)
📚 How to break learning into manageable chunks
📚 How to approach exam papers with confidence
What really makes the difference, though, is having TIME.
Yes, I've taught GCSE courses from scratch and helped students achieve passes within just two months. Even overnight!
But cramming two years of content into a few weeks places enormous pressure on a young person.
That's why many of our students join us in Year 9 or Year 10. They develop study habits, revision routines and confidence long before the pressure of Year 11 arrives.
Right now, many Year 10 students are preparing for their mock exams.
And I’ve learnt a lot about mentality towards exams over the past 3 1/2 years talking to parents and when they’ve chosen to book…
It's easy as a parent to think:
➡️ "We'll wait for their results in July."
➡️ "Let's see how they get on."
➡️ "We'll start in September."
➡️ "We'll wait until parents’ evening; their first mocks."
➡️ "Let's wait until January and get over new year."
Before you know it, there are just four months left.
That's around 16 weekly sessions to cover two years of content and multiple exam papers in every subject.
And let's not even talk about the summer learning dip coming up!
There’s no wonder why children eventually ask for tuition by Easter!
If your child would like some additional support, we have a few different options available if you’re not ready to commit to a subject for tuition yet. (And our independent learning programme is perfect for the summer holidays!).
Option A.
Independent Learning Programme £29 per month
✔ Diagnostic assessment
✔ Personalised learning pathway
✔ Five-minute learning sessions focused on confidence gaps
✔ Quizzes to check understanding
✔ Instant parent feedback and progress tracking
You can also upgrade to include a weekly 15-minute coaching session (£49 per month including independent learning platform ) to boost their confidence and support their routine and where to focus.
Option B.
Study Skills Sessions
Every Saturday, 11am–12pm £20 per session
These sessions focus on whichever subject your child needs support with that week, alongside practical revision and study strategies to help them learn more effectively. These are free when booked with 2 or more sessions per week!
Option C.
Dyslexia-Focused Study Skills Programme
Every Wednesday, 4.30pm–5.30pm
Designed to support learners with dyslexia and literacy difficulties through practical strategies that build confidence, organisation, memory and independent study skills.
Or all Options alongside tuition.
I know that success in exams isn't always about learning more content. Often it's about having enough time, using the right strategies and developing the confidence to believe that you can do it with enough time to practise.

This is the story of one of one parents (she is a great person to follow!) and it’s wonderful that we are part of his journey now and part of the positive changes for all of them. We are so proud of the young man he is and it’s a pleasure to teach him and make him feel safe. 🌱That day changed everything
It’s not that the signs were not there
Or that we were completely unaware
You see, deep inside I knew the depth
I saw the struggle and the pain
As he begged, pleaded and wept
But we kept trying, again and again
‘School is best’, we are told
‘School is where they’re meant to be’
‘School is the only way’
Indoctrinated, we agree
It’s not a conscious choice we make
When we bring them into the world
The unspoken path of school compliance
An inherited map, unfurled
On that day, my instincts overridden
I ignored the voice inside
I listened to the ‘experts’
A regret I cannot put aside
Because now I see too clearly
How the system favours ticks
On the damned attendance register
Wellbeing lost to statistics
At a time my son needed understanding
At a time he needed to be heard
At a time my boy needed support
Their decisions were absurd
He was 9 years old in crisis
He was 9 years old - just a child
When he was restrained
When his innocence was defiled
By the actions of those people
Who, in that moment, failed my child
Failed to see a boy in need
Treated like an animal in the wild
The call came - ‘school’ displayed on my screen
If I’d trusted myself, could I have foreseen?
The damage that would be done that day in school
I trusted them, not myself, and I felt like a fool
Because I now know for sure
That a parent knows best
What is right for their child
That WE can attest
What is best for our kids
When to push, when to rest
When school is NOT the answer
A parent knows best
That day changed everything
That day our world was shattered
The plans, the hopes, the dreams
Everything became scattered
The future lost its outline
The certainty withdrew
And every ordinary thing
Became something to 'get through'
Alone, adrift, broken, fractured, lost
We searched for some support
Education, health, social care
Every service would fall short
So we were alone, our boy’s nervous system on fire
Looking for the help our family would require
To recover from the devastating effects of that day
Looking for someone to help us find our way
When I finally realised that help did not exist
That the only way through this was for a parent to persist
For a parent to become advocate, detective and lawyer
For a parent to become professional local authority annoyer
THAT day changed everything
THAT day my eyes were opened wide
To the reality we were facing
THAT day I found my stride
And my confidence and my power
And then I started to learn the law
As I gained more and more knowledge
I became a voice they couldn’t ignore
I fought, I pushed, I played their game better than they could
You see, I was a SEND parent fighting for my son’s childhood
And when you back us into a corner
We will not shrink or hide
We will not let poor wording
In an EHCP slide
We will not be deterred from fighting for what our children need
A SEND parent’s heart is strong and we will not concede
I took on this fight alone
My love was my drive
My hope for a future
Where my son could thrive
EOTAS was the only path that could help my son
And so I fought to the end - I fought until we won
Despite the cost, despite the pain
I would fight this fight again and again
Because, you see, this child of mine
He has a different mind
It does not fit in mainstream
But it must not be left behind
Because these kids who have ‘different’ minds
Are exactly what the world needs
He sees the world in different ways
And different minds plant different seeds
And so it’s perfect that he is now supported
By Sowing Seeds tuition
Tutors who really see my amazing son
And help us on our mission
To enable him to be himself
To put his mask aside
So the amazing boy he truly is
No longer has to hide
And watching him step into the light
Without fear, without disguise
Has shown me that the different minds
Are often where true brilliance lies
So, that day really did change everything
But now I finally see
That helping him become himself
Also helped me become me

Today was a heart-warming day and it’s lovely to celebrate these moments - thanks for sharing Emma. 🥰 One of our other tutors was crying earlier today too. When I was told that E made Jo cry, I was initially worried what had happened…and then reassured they were happy tears! E said that he feels safe with her and enjoys learning. We all have good days and bad days…and today was a good day for these learners 💙. We will continue to make adjustments however we can; and will strive to make every learner feel safe to learn and discover their potential. One of my students giggled today. It caught me completely off guard.
I'm not an outwardly emotional person.
But to hear the sound of genuine, pure, childish joy from a boy whose parents didn't think would talk to me 7 months ago...argh it got me. Everything we'd done suddenly gained meaning in that one second.
This was safety. This was happiness.
This is what alternative provisions like Sowing Seeds Tuition and Wellbeing can achieve. Steadily building safety; forging relationships; breaking down walls; listening; researching; personalising.
Yes we've got through the year 7 curriculum, and yes, he can prove why the sum of three consecutive integers is divisible by 3.
But today he giggled. That's everything. ❤️

🤩Our incredible team was on the front page of The Telegraph & Argus (Bradford) last week! It’s hard to believe that just under 2 weeks ago we celebrated with the incredible educators who were finalists in Bradford’s Education Awards - and it’s thanks to your nominations 🥰. We didn’t win Specialist Provision of the Year (this year!), and we knew it was a tough category, but to be in the photo on the front cover shows how proud we were to be there.🥰!
We also had the privilege of judging the shortlist for Supporting Member of Staff of the Year - and Stacey (our Head of Operations) and I presented the award. We purposely chose this category over others as it reflects the importance of these key professionals who play an even more important role to support children, families (and all staff) at school, home and in the community. All of the finalists were fantastic and well done to Hayley for winning this award! She was in complete shock and Stacey and I stayed with her on stage, so she could celebrate this moment, as she was so nervous.
We would have loved to invite all our team from Sowing Seeds Alternative Learning and to be able to celebrate how much we’ve grown and what we have already achieved together for our learners and their families. Everyone was there in spirit.💙
