7 Ways to Prepare For GCSE Results Day

Prepare You and Your Child For GCSE Results Day...

As GCSE results day approaches, it’s normal for both you and your child to feel a mix of excitement, anxiety, and anticipation. I am going to be sharing a video soon to help you as a parent prepare and know what the day will look like when they enter those doors to collect their results

GCSE results day is a significant milestone, but it’s essential to keep it in perspective. By creating a supportive and calm environment, setting realistic expectations, and being prepared for various outcomes, you can help your child navigate this experience with comfort. Remember, the journey doesn’t end with GCSE results; it’s just the beginning of many opportunities to come!

Here are seven practical ways to prepare for the big day, along with supportive phrases to help manage your child’s nerves, your nerves, and potential disappointment.

01 - Create a Calm Environment

Tip: Ensure your home is a calming space in the days leading up to results day. Reduce stress by maintaining a tidy, quiet, and positive atmosphere and even helping them achieve this in their own bedroom! Their nerves will be high and their physical clutter might also show what they’re feeling mentally at the moment too.

Phrase: “Whatever the results, we are proud of the effort you’ve put in and will figure out the next steps together.”

02 - Set Realistic Expectations

Tip: Discussing potential outcomes can help manage expectations. Remind your child that results are just one part of their educational journey and there are lots of options available if the original plan doesn’t work.

Phrase: “Remember, these results are based on one day when you sat the exam, not what you can achieve. It’s just one part of your story. They don’t define you or your future.”

03 - Prepare for Different Scenarios

Tip: Think through the possible results and the steps for each scenario – can you talk to them about this too? This can include celebrating successes or exploring alternative pathways if the results are not as expected.

Phrase:
“If the results are different from what we hoped, we’ll look at all the options together and find the best path forward.”

“You are so much more than your grades. You have so many wonderful qualities that can’t be measured by a test.”

“Your value isn’t determined by a piece of paper—never forget that.”

04 - Focus on Effort and Growth

Tip: Emphasise the importance of effort and personal growth rather than just the final grades. Praise the hard work and dedication your child has shown.

Phrase: “I’ve seen how hard you’ve worked, and that’s something to be incredibly proud of, no matter what the results say.”

05 - Plan a Pre and Post-Results Day Activity

Tip: Arrange a fun activity or outing for before and after the results are received. This can help take the focus off the grades and provide a positive distraction.

Phrase: “Let’s plan something fun for after we get your results. It’ll be a great way to unwind and enjoy the day.”

06 - Be Available and Supportive

Tip: Ensure that you are present or contactable when they collect their results on results day to offer immediate support. Whether the results are good or not as hoped, being there for your child is crucial. Have a contingency support plan ready just in case they can’t reach you.

Phrase: “I’ll be right there with you on results day. We’ll handle whatever comes our way together.”

07 - Explore Next Steps

Tip: Regardless of the outcome, discuss and research next steps. Whether it’s celebrating achievements or seeking advice on re-sits, college, or apprenticeships, having a plan can provide reassurance.

Phrase: “We’ll look at all the options available and find what’s best for you. There are always ways forward.”
