Five important questions to ask when choosing a tutor

When choosing a tutor for your child, here are five important things to ask about:

Educational Background

Enquire about the tutor’s educational qualifications and expertise in the subject(s) they will be teaching. Ask about their relevant degrees, certifications, or teaching experience to ensure they have the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively support your child’s learning. Also, do they have work commitments which could impact on delivering sessions regularly?

Enhanced DBS Check

Ensure that the tutor has undergone an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, which helps verify their suitability to work with children. This check screens their criminal record history and ensures the safety and well-being of your child during tutoring sessions.

Insurance

Discuss whether the tutor has professional liability insurance. While it may not be a requirement, having insurance demonstrates the tutor’s commitment to professionalism and accountability in case of any unforeseen incidents or accidents during the tutoring process.

Track Record and Results

Request information about the tutor’s past successes and student outcomes. Ask for references or testimonials from previous students or parents, and inquire about the tutor’s ability to help students improve their grades or achieve their academic goals. This will give you an idea of their effectiveness as an educator.

Teaching Approach and Methods

Gain insight into the tutor’s teaching style and methods. Ask how they tailor their lessons to meet individual student needs, whether they provide personalised activities, and how they check student progress both academically and emotionally. Understanding their approach will help you determine if it aligns with your values and your child’s learning style and preferences.

Remember, these points serve as a starting point for your conversation with potential tutors. You can also ask additional questions that are specific to your child’s needs and areas of concern and request a trial period.
